Class Description

The ancient art of Mitsuro Hikime is a Japanese modeling wax that creates exceptionally delicate detail that resembles the most exquisite the texture of organic material like grass, hair, or flowing silk.

The wax is made up of a mixture of pine resin and bees wax, along with other waxes, depending on the recipe you use. (You can buy it pre-made and focus on design.) You may want to customize your wax to your preferences. This is done by understanding the recipe.

Much like taffy, the cold wax is gently warmed and pulled until the desired effect is created.  Students will learn how to make their own wax with hands on demonstration. They will also learn how to adjust the wax to their personal needs for creating models. Then we will explore several pulling techniques for creating ribbon like jewelry.

Jennifer will also show students how to include a few stone setting possibilities for lost wax casting. On the last day of class, we will be casting a few of the models the student has made. So, bring some metal to cast!
