Course Description:In this class, we will explore Cloisonné enameling on copper and on fine silver foil over a copper base as an economical way to learn and practice enameling. I will teach students my workflow on how I plan a design, turn an image into a line drawing, use fine silver Cloisonné wire to create the wirework, prepare the canvas, choose colors, apply the enamel and how to grind, polish and prepare an enamel piece for setting into jewelry.Students will learn how to do intricate wirework for complex projects. We will explore how to create depth by texturing the foil, creating shadows and highlights, layering with colors, opalescent, semi-opaque and translucent enamels. I will guide you on how to choose colors, blend enamel colors to create new ones or to color match your design. We will cover safety, application methods and kiln techniques. We will focus on what enamel is and how it reacts when heat is applied. Learn how to prepare metal bases for enameling and apply successive layers of transparent enamels by sifting and wet packing. Students will leave with confidence to further explore these fun and fascinating techniques.Skills Covered:SafetyCloisonné Wire Forming and ApplicationEnamel Colors, Types, Forms and Basic TechniquesEnamel Application Torch and Kiln Firing Counter EnamelingWashing Transparent EnamelsMetal PreparationTexturing and Enameling with Silver FoilEnamel Gradation and Custom ColorsEnameling Tools and UseHands on experience
