Click Here to Join Class Description In this class we will explore the application of a blacksmithing technique called the “Rubik’s Twist”. This will involve precise marking cutting and twisting to make an interesting and intricate looking bangle bracelet. It is a project that is approachable for all levels, and you will leave with a beautiful bracelet. Prerequisite At least one previous metalsmithing class. This will be a very approachable class requiring only basic sawing and a single solder joint. It will require some precision, but technique’s will be discussed to make this very doable. Click Here to Join Class Description Intermediate students will continue their work from the last series of classes and/or begin anew. Beginner 2 students will advance skills learned in Beginner 1 classes. Exploration of design and technique will be approached from multi sensory exercises that will be worked through in the first hours of the first class. These exercises will create a mini design portfolio which will be utilized in the following weeks to create a small jewelry collection emphasizing texture, connections, movement and form. We will approach designs collectively with conversations as a group, and individually between instructor and student, as each student will have unique, one of a kind designs. The instruction in class will tailor itself to the specific approaches and techniques needed by each student to complete their designs. Some examples will include texturing, forming, stone setting (prong, bezel, tube, tab) as well as melting scrap and repurposing metals and fusing. While this class will be set up to facilitate the completion of two to three pieces, the projects for each student will be their own ideas, design, and execution. The goal of this series of classes is to nurture the voice of each artist and to encourage the expression of the artist's voice in a manner consistent with their aesthetic. Challenge, fun, risk taking, and personal expression will be necessary for this class. Techniques and instruction offered and approaches to design will be integrated in this class with a spirit of collaboration and community. I look forward to sharing this adventure with you. Prerequisite Beginner 2 to intermediate skill level, comfort with soldering and foundational forming/stone setting and texturing. We will cover how to apply the vinyl resist to your copper based alloy, how to safely and properly etch your metal, how to stop the etching process, how to clean up the salt water when the etching process is complete, and how to properly filter the salt water so it can be reused again and stored properly. A list of all materials used in class will be provided. You will leave with at least 1 fully etched sheet of copper (or copper based alloy) ready to be turned into something fabulous!

These clasp mechanisms can be modified and incorporated in unique and unusual ways, in innumerable variations, into necklace and bracelet closures. If attending in-person, please plan to arrive no more than 15 minutes early to the class. ----- CAN'T ATTEND LIVE? ----- ----- WANT TO REVIEW WHAT YOU LEARNED? ----- A recording of the workshop will be available to all participants for 30 days following the workshop. Transitions: As of May 1, 2024, there will be an administrative fee of $30 applicable for any changes made to your class format, including moving from in-person to virtual sessions. This fee is implemented to cover the administrative costs associated with processing such changes. Note: Each class is independent, so feel free to choose the 3-day or 2-day session—or both! Each class will focus on creating different styles of unconventional clasps. If you take both sessions, you'll come away learning how to make 6 different styles! In the second, 2-day part of this workshop, participants will create 2 different samples of alternative clasp mechanisms. These clasp mechanisms can be modified and incorporated in unique and unusual ways, in innumerable variations, into necklace and bracelet closures - becoming integrated into the design, or as the main attraction of a jewelry piece. Clasps don’t have to be an afterthought at the back of a chain. These are clasp mechanisms that are functional, fun, intriguing and invite being taken apart and put back together like a puzzle. Part 2 In the second 2-day session/class (October 19 & 20), we will create the above two clasp mechanism samples: a Rotating Key Lock Clasp and a Side-box Clasp. On October 15th, the evening before the workshop, Suzanne will give an approximately sixty-minute presentation that will introduce participants to many different types of clasping methods and mechanisms for jewelry, both historical and contemporary. It will also include a section on clasp inspirations - ideas coming from non-jewelry sources, to inspire creative thinking about clasps.
