Class Description
This class will introduce beginning students to the technique of cloisonne´ enamel and challenge intermediate level students to create more personal enamel imagery.
Enameling is the process of fusing glass onto metal. Cloisonne´ is an enameling technique that uses wire to create cells into which one builds up enamel layer. I love the Cloisonné technique because it is a blend of control and freedom. I enjoy the control required to design and build up “wire cells” and I embrace the freedom of painting and layering numerous layers of different types of enamel within the more controlled cells.
This is a skill-based class; emphasis is on understanding the cloisonne´ technique so that you know enough to find your own way (not copy my artwork). Students will make many simple samples to explore tools/materials and to create unique enamel imagery using many different applications, colors, and firings.
We will explore…
Enamel Basics: Prepare, apply, and fire enamel on copper and fine silver
Enamel Science: How and Why your enamel “works”
Cloisonne´ Technique: Bend wires and apply/layer enamel color
Silver
