Learn the technical fundamentals of the lost wax casting process with casting extraordinaire Dallas Vinson.
In this class, participants will delve into the technical process of lost wax casting, with hands-on practice at every step. The process starts with a wax model. Participants may bring their own finished waxes or select from a variety of waxes on hand. To prepare for casting, participants will learn proper techniques for attaching sprues to the wax model, how to calculate the amount of metal needed to cast, and how to mix and pour investment. Next, participants will learn how to operate the kiln to achieve the optimal temperature schedule for burnout and casting. On day two, participants will learn how to vacuum cast, how to safely operate an electric melting furnace and reliably pour molten metal into the flask for a successful, finished casting. Casting results will be evaluated and troubleshooting tips discussed.
Students may bring their own metal, or may purchase silver or bronze from the instructor. NOTE: We will not be carving wax at all in this 2-day workshop. The focus will be on correct investing and casting techniques.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have acquired the skills and knowledge needed to pass the skills test for casting in open studio, completion of which will allow the member to utilize vacuum casting equipment with monitor supervision on scheduled open studio casting days.
