One-Day Beginner Wax Carving Workshop: Textured Rings
This one-day intensive is designed for those new to jewelry making who want to explore the tactile world of wax carving. You will learn to transform a simple wax tube into a custom, hand-carved ring finished with unique surface textures.
Skill Level: Absolute Beginner. No prior experience or stones required.
Class Overview
• Focus: Introduction to subtractive carving and surface texturing.
• Project: Create a one-of-a-kind ring ready for casting in silver or gold.
What You Will Learn
• Sizing & Prep: How to measure and size a wax ring blank to fit your finger perfectly.
• Subtractive Carving: Using files and saws to refine the basic silhouette of your ring.
• Texture Techniques: Experimenting with various tools—from burs to heat pens—to create organic, geometric, or distressed surface textures.
• Casting Preparation: Learning how to sand and smooth your wax piece to ensure a professional-quality finish after it is cast in metal.
Suggested Tools & Supplies
All primary materials for carving your first ring are provided. Below are the key tools we will use during the session:
• Wax Ring Tube: Blue carving wax (rounded or flat top).
• Carving Tools: Wax files, needle files, and X-Acto knives for shaping.
• Texturing Tools: Wax saw blades, needle files, heat gun, wax pens, sandpaper Xacto knives, and battery-powered wax pens for additive textures.
• Next Steps: At the end of class, you have the option to have your carving cast into silver or gold with the help of artist Dallas Vinson
