  • Let's Get Moving: Metal Forging | MetalArtsGuildGA.org

< Back Let's Get Moving: Metal Forging October 5, 2024 Instructor Courtney Poole-Pendergrast | In this one day class I will teach stone setting from the initial planning and fabrication of your prong mounting to the final setting of your stone. Previous Add to Cart Next This is an IN-PERSON workshop at the MAGG Studio. Please plan to arrive no more than 15 minutes early to the class. Prerequisite Students taking this class should be comfortable with basic jewelry techniques such as using a hammer, pliers, saw frame, files, etc. It is recommended but not required that students be comfortable with lighting a torch to anneal metal. If you do not have any experience, please contact the instructor to discuss the class before registering. Introduction to Forging In this class, students will be introduced to cold forging. They will gain a strong understanding of how metal moves, work hardening, and the importance of annealing. They will be introduced to the use of different hammers and how to properly utilize them in relation to various working surfaces, as well as how to intentionally control their manipulation of the metal. This will include discussion on how to be deliberate in the forms we create and how to get creative with the forms that don’t cooperate. For our project, we will be manipulating round stock into more complex and interesting forms. A project will be presented for students to copy but, if desired, they will be allowed to modify the design and make it their own. Students will leave with confidence to further explore these fun and fascinating techniques at home. This is a one-day class that will alternate between demonstrations and working time for students to reinforce the techniques introduced. The information will be technically presented but will also be broken down into simple terms for those that are new to metalsmithing. The instructor’s goal for this class is for each student to be challenged within their ability and that they each go home with confidence on the topics being presented.

  • Courtney Pendergrast | MetalArtsGuildGA.org

< Back Georgia Talent Courtney Poole Pendergrast is the owner, designer, and maker for Poole Pendergrast Studios, located in the foothills of Northeast Georgia. Fascinated with the mechanical aspects of all things, Courtney enjoys working as a jewelry artist and metalsmith because it requires ingenuity and creativity. She loves that there is always something new to discover, plus she has a soft spot for a well-balanced hammer! The versatility of metal inspires Courtney while form, function, and aesthetics all play a key role in her designs. By applying different processes, a simple piece of metal can look as soft as a satin bow, rough-hewn as an old, weathered iron gate, or intricate as a piece of lace. Her goal as an artist is to grasp a raw idea and forge it into something tangible and enduring. Courtney refurbishes antique jewelry, offers unique custom work, and creates original one-of-a-kind pieces. She also teaches jewelry and metalsmithing classes tailored to each student’s skill level. You can view her work at www.poole-pendergrast.com Artist Statement As a jeweler and metalsmith, I value traditional techniques and every design is meticulously fabricated by hand in my studio. I love the juxtaposition of combining delicate filigree with forged and rough hewn pieces. Using hot and cold forging techniques, I enjoy constructing teapots, utensils, and unique containers to house insects for observation. When designing custom jewelry, I incorporate methods of construction reminiscent of jewelers from generations gone by. Whether a piece is a custom heirloom to be passed on for generations or an object to be enjoyed by a child, I want it to be well considered and have purpose. https://www.poole-pendergrast.com/ Courtney Pendergrast

Click Here to Join Class Description In this intermediate class, students will continue their work from the last series of classes and/or begin anew. Exploration of design and technique will be approached from multi sensory exercises that will be worked through in the first hours of the first class. These exercises will create a mini design portfolio which will be utilized in the following weeks to create a small jewelry collection emphasizing texture, connections, movement and form. We will approach designs collectively with conversations as a group, and individually between instructor and student, as each student will have unique, one of a kind designs. The instruction in class will tailor itself to the specific approaches and techniques needed by each student to complete their designs. Some examples will include texturing, forming, stone setting (prong, bezel, tube, tab) as well as melting scrap and repurposing metals and fusing. While this class will be set up to facilitate the completion of two to three pieces, the projects for each student will be their own ideas, design, and execution. The goal of this series of classes is to nurture the voice of each artist and to encourage the expression of the artist's voice in a manner consistent with their aesthetic. Challenge, fun, risk taking, and personal expression will be necessary for this class. Techniques and instruction offered and approaches to design will be integrated in this class with a spirit of collaboration and community. I look forward to sharing this adventure with you.
