Click Here to Join Class Description Reticulation is the process of creating “mountains and valleys”, structures or patterns in metal surfaces. By heating specially prepared metal sheets with various torches, the semi-melted metal flows toward the flame. Surfaces created in this manner bring “life” to the metal surface. This workshop will cover: Discussion and creation of metal shapes suitable for reticulation Preparing the metal through depletion gilding Manipulation of the metal during the heating process Various torches used to create certain design patterns Forming reticulated metals into 3D forms Integration, patination, and repair of reticulated metals Granulation is an ancient method of surface embellishment that has seen a rebirth in the last century. Its appeal is the surface patterns, which are created through applying various size metal granules producing designs of geometric or abstract nature. Students will learn: Making small snips in metal Making a special flux for adhering the granules to metal Applying beads to metal surfaces Consideration of various methods of granulation Fusing granules to metal, how to repair them if not completely fired How to finish a work, patination and repair, if needed Consideration in combining granulation with other techniques QUESTIONS? - Alternative Unconventional Clasps & Closures Class 1 | MetalArtsGuildGA.org
Members receive 8% OFF all classes and workshops! Alternative Unconventional Clasps & Closures Class 1 Instructor Suzanne Williams Wednesday- Friday October 16-18, 2024 10AM-4PM ET 3 Day Workshop $480 Members receive 8% OFF! Click Here to Join Class Description Note: Each class is independent, so feel free to choose the 3-day or 2-day session—or both! Each class will focus on creating different styles of unconventional clasps. If you take both sessions, you'll come away learning how to make 6 different styles! In this 3 day workshop, participants will create 4 different samples of alternative clasp mechanisms. These clasp mechanisms can be modified and incorporated in unique and unusual ways, in innumerable variations, into necklace and bracelet closures - becoming integrated into the design, or as the main attraction of a jewelry piece. Clasps don’t have to be an afterthought at the back of a chain. These are clasp mechanisms that are functional, fun, intriguing and invite being taken apart and put back together like a puzzle. Class 1: In this 3-day session/class (October 16 – 18), we will create the above four clasp mechanism samples in sterling silver: 2 versions of a Rotating Insert Clasp, a basic, and a more complex version of that clasp, an Interlocking Puzzle Clasp, and a Wedge Lock Clasp. On October 15th, the evening before the workshop, Suzanne will give an approximately sixty-minute presentation that will introduce participants to many different types of clasping methods and mechanisms for jewelry, both historical and contemporary. It will also include a section on clasp inspirations - ideas coming from non-jewelry sources, to inspire creative thinking about clasps. Prerequisite Students need to be able to solder and saw.
