< Back Visiting Artist Participation in the arts was always important to me growing up. A strong arts program in high school influenced my decision to pursue a degree in the arts. I chose the arts program at Bowling Green State University in northwest Ohio where I discovered and fell in love with metals. I was introduced to many artists, including Michael Boyd, who became an inspiration for me. Upon graduation I apprenticed for Michael Boyd at his studio in Colorado. That experience turned into an eight year adventure that continues today. It was with Michael that I learned to work with and manipulate stone, adding a new element to my love of jewelry design. Since being in Colorado I have started my own business, Ryan Gardner Designs. I now showcase my work in galleries across the country. In this two-day workshop, you’ll learn how to incorporate gold into your work without putting yourself in the poorhouse. In fact, you’ll be able to add stunning gold accents to your work for as little as $20. We’ll start by exploring alternative forms of gold—placer gold flour, gold powder, gold foil flakes—that offer more mileage than traditional forms such as wire, sheet and casting grain. We’ll alloy various karats and colors of gold so you can use less of the precious stuff while preserving its beautiful glow. We’ll also explore gold fusion approaches tailored specifically for gold and steel using a variety of bonding and heat control strategies. You’ll experiment with layering, fusing, and burnishing to achieve rich textures, unexpected effects and bold contrasts between raw blackened steel and the glow of gold. We will also explore fusing bronze powder that mimics the look of gold. Design is an essential element of eye appeal. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to use design techniques that harness the power of gold to elevate your work. Click Here to Join Class Description I am self taught and my process shows it! I use techniques that might be foreign to you, but all that matters is that they work for me. I don't believe in boundaries or rules, and I want to show you how how you can find experimental techniques that work for you. My classroom environment is to aspire creativity, experimentation, and imagination, and my teaching style is focused on you ... you will have more time to work than the usual workshop - we will have short demos and then you will work on your own while I help with questions, comments, or ideas. You will learn in a way that might be new to you, but that's the point. I want you to see that there'smore than one way to do something, even if you are formally trained. Here's what we'll do: We all have jewels that are outdated and unworn. Instead of leaving them in a drawer, let's use the components to create new fabulous adornments! We'll take apart the unused jewels and use it's best components, such as precious metals, precious or man-made gemstones, etc. Let's redefine what the components are. Supply List: Download class supply llist below and also will be sent to students via email Download Class Supply List Building upon the skills that students have learned in the first beginning class, this class will focus on further developing and improving those skills. While working toward honing soldering and finishing skills, students will be introduced to a variety of stone setting applications. Some of the stone setting techniques that will be covered are tube setting, flush setting, simple prong setting and bezels. We will also delve into step bezels and tab setting as time allows. This is a fast paced, skills based class. Students are encouraged to design and create pieces of their choice. Demonstrations will be be tailored to the student’s needs at the level that is appropriate for the class. Techniques and skills that may be covered, are: making rings, bracelets, earrings, simple mechanisms, hollow forms and chains. The instructor will focus on helping students advance their work through gentle critiques and hands on demonstrations.

Born in a small town in Southern Maine, May moved to Brooklyn in 1998, where she lived and worked for 18 years,focusing primarily on painting and photography.
