< Back Visiting Artist Aalia Mujtaba is the designer and metalsmith behind Metaalia Jewelry, creating bold and graphic, mixed-metal, jewelry and accessories. For over 20 years, Aalia has grown her craft and her business in the South. She has taught metalsmithing at Atlanta’s Callanwolde Fine Arts Center for 16 years and exhibits in craft shows and festivals locally. Click Here to Join Class Description Note: Each class is independent, so feel free to choose the 3-day or 2-day session—or both! Each class will focus on creating different styles of unconventional clasps. If you take both sessions, you'll come away learning how to make 6 different styles! In the second, 2-day part of this workshop, participants will create 2 different samples of alternative clasp mechanisms. These clasp mechanisms can be modified and incorporated in unique and unusual ways, in innumerable variations, into necklace and bracelet closures - becoming integrated into the design, or as the main attraction of a jewelry piece. Clasps don’t have to be an afterthought at the back of a chain. These are clasp mechanisms that are functional, fun, intriguing and invite being taken apart and put back together like a puzzle. Part 2 In the second 2-day session/class (October 19 & 20), we will create the above two clasp mechanism samples: a Rotating Key Lock Clasp and a Side-box Clasp. On October 15th, the evening before the workshop, Suzanne will give an approximately sixty-minute presentation that will introduce participants to many different types of clasping methods and mechanisms for jewelry, both historical and contemporary. It will also include a section on clasp inspirations - ideas coming from non-jewelry sources, to inspire creative thinking about clasps. Prerequisite Students need to be able to solder and saw. In this fast paced studio class, you will be introduced to a variety of tools and hand skills used to create jewelry and objects from non-ferrous metals. Using brass, copper, and sterling silver you will be introduced to a number of jewelry making techniques. Those techniques will include, but not be limited to: sawing, piercing, filing, sanding, riveting, texturing, forming, finishing, soldering and bezel setting a stone. With a focus on the principles of design, student projects may include pendants, rings, earrings, and bracelets. Come join us in this warm, welcoming, fun environment to learn something new! < Back Second Saturdays at the Studio: Inspired by Stained Glass February 11, 2023 Elizabeth Debban will demonstrate a stained glass inspired design. Previous Add to Cart Next Join us this Saturday at 10:30am for this month's Second Saturday demonstration, which is part of a 2-part series. This month, Elizabeth Debban will demonstrate a stained glass inspired design. Then next month, she'll show how to add the “panes of glass” and do a plique-a-jour inlay “enamel” technique using gel polish. Second Saturday is open to everyone, and after the demo, members with an Open Studio plan can stay for Open Studio to work. (Members can purchase an Open Studio plan here .) About Second Saturdays at the Studio: This monthly mini session will consist of a unique demo, theme, lesson, or challenge to re-energize your studio practice! After the demo, Members with an Open Studio plan can stay for Open Studio to work on their pieces. If you've never been to the MAGG Studio, this is a great opportunity to check us out! Demonstrations will include; rivet and hinge variations from wire, partial tubing and drilled thick stock, and freely moving linked items. This virtual demonstration filled workshop will cover different ways to create chains and link pendants. Demonstrations will include; rivet and hinge variations from wire, partial tubing and drilled thick stock, and linking items together in ways that achieve ease of movement. We’ll focus on the pendant and chain forms, playing with how to create movement within the pieces, which participants may later apply to earrings, bracelets or other works. A PDF handout will accompany the workshop for participants to have for their future making adventures. If participants follow the demonstration in the workshop, they can expect to have a collection of examples and an understanding of a variety of additional possibilities within the techniques demonstrated.
