We will take a deep dive into this new approach and learn how to use powdered metals as paint to create colorful hues and shades on steel surfaces. You will be able to experiment with a spectrum of colors, textures, and patterns, pushing the boundaries of traditional metalsmithing. Steel has many practical advantages, not the least of which are cost and accessibility. Steel is strong, malleable, and ductile, making it durable and workable. It is lightweight, making larger pieces of jewelry comfortable. Topping the list of advantages is steel's high melting temperature, which makes it ideal for fusing other metals to it. Fusing gold and other non-ferrous metals to steel takes it to another level and results in jewelry that has a modern, urban edge but also feels ancient and rich. As alternative metal, steel has another big advantage—it’s different—and invites you to dare to stand apart and try new things. Steel can serve as a catalyst that opens the floodgates of creativity. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN • Basics of working with steel. Sourcing steel, its characteristics, techniques such as shearing, sawing, forming and soldering steel. • Sourcing. All about powdered metals...where to buy them, the metals, alloys and formulas (pure powders, flakes, metal clay, etc.) that are available in powder form and how to grind your own powders. • Effects. Understanding how the various powdered metals react when fused to steel. • Mixing. How to mix powdered metals “paint” to create your own individual palette of colors and textures. • Painting techniques. Painting powdered metals onto steel and fusing them to the surface. Heat and flow control. Troubleshooting. • Advanced fusion techniques. How to mix various powdered metals to create alloys both in the “paint” or during the fusion process. • Designing. Exploration of design possibilities. WORKSHOP STRUCTURE Each day will be structured with a combination of instruction, demonstrations, interactive discussion and hands-on work. The instructor will provide individual support and guidance throughout. During the workshop, you will have the guidance and opportunity to produce at least three completed pieces of steel jewelry. Patterns for these pieces will be included in the course handout and you are free to use the patterns or create your own designs. SKILL LEVEL Students should be comfortable using a torch and should possess basic metal working skills, such as sawing, filing and forming. Click Here to Join Class Description This class will introduce beginning students to the technique of cloisonne´ enamel and challenge intermediate level students to create more personal enamel imagery. Enameling is the process of fusing glass onto metal. Cloisonne´ is an enameling technique that uses wire to create cells into which one builds up enamel layer. I love the Cloisonné technique because it is a blend of control and freedom. I enjoy the control required to design and build up “wire cells” and I embrace the freedom of painting and layering numerous layers of different types of enamel within the more controlled cells. This is a skill-based class; emphasis is on understanding the cloisonne´ technique so that you know enough to find your own way (not copy my artwork). Students will make many simple samples to explore tools/materials and to create unique enamel imagery using many different applications, colors, and firings. Set it & Forget it I Learning to design and fabricate your own settings is a great way to liberate your making process. In this workshop we will explore the wonderful world of making settings for stones, coins, ceramic shards, your child’s first lock of hair and many other beautiful objects that are so special they deserve to have a home built for them. Part one of this workshop will cover bezel, tab, frame, and basket settings. Students will be working with copper and/or silver depending on their piece and individual desires. Some basic metalworking skills such as sawing, filing and soldering will be needed in this workshop. I will demo step-by-step processes and have a PDF handout available for students to reference later when working on their own. Set it & Forget it II In part II of Set it and Forget it, we will build off of what you learned in the first class, taking forward steps to creating more complicated settings. During these sessions together, we’ll focus on faceted gemstones, both round and square. We will cover: tube, prong and basket settings with variations of all these that will add a unique touch to your work. I will demo step-by-step processes and have a PDF handout available for students to reference later when working on their own. Previous Add to Cart Next This is a VIRTUAL event with real-time interaction via Zoom. Admission to this lecture is included in the Foldforming workshop, or you may register for the lecture only from this page. This lecture introduces the Foldforming system, reviews its origins and working principles, the ideas and experiments that gave rise to this new way of seeing and working with sheet metal. Foldforming is a new, rapid, easily learned way of shaping sheet metal with hand tools. It uses the plalsticity, ductility and clay-like nature of metal to quickly create 3D forms and shapes that resemble chased, constructed and soldered forms. Complex high relief forms are produced from single sheets of metal often with a single annealing. Tools are simple; fingers, hands, hammers, mallets, anvils and rolling mills. The techniques work with all metals and are applicable for jewellery, holloware, sculpture, enamelling, anodizing etc. The principles work with all metals including steel.

< Back Stone Setting, From Start to Finish December 8, 2024 Instructor Courtney Pendergrast | In this one day class I will teach stone setting from the initial planning and fabrication of your prong mounting to the final setting of your stone. Previous Add to Cart Next This is an IN-PERSON workshop at the MAGG Studio. Please plan to arrive no more than 15 minutes early to the class. Prerequisites: Students should have taken at least 2 beginner classes This class will teach stone setting from the initial planning and fabrication of your prong mounting to the final setting of your stone. Students will become more refined in their approach to working at the bench as they use basic building and soldering techniques to create settings, made specifically for their stones. There will be a demonstration on building a prong for a cabochon that is flat on the back. For the more motivated student, there will also be a demonstration to build a basket for a faceted stone, that has depth. Students will be encouraged to complete the cabochon setting and are welcome to tackle both. There will also be a demonstration on the technique of flush setting. This class will be challenging but does not require an extensive background in previous setting experience. Students should come eager to listen, learn and ready to work. The teacher will take care of the rest! This is a one-day class that will alternate between demonstration and working time for students to practice what was discussed to reinforce the techniques introduced. Bring any prong setting projects that you are working on and have questions about. Time allowing, questions from these outside projects could facilitate some great discussions on the topic being taught. The instructor’s goal for this class is for each student to be challenged within their ability and that they each go home with confidence on the topics being presented. Students taking this class should be comfortable with basic jewelry techniques such as using a hammer, pliers, saw frame, files, etc.. They should also have some experience with using a flex shaft to learn flush setting which requires drilling holes and cutting seats with setting burs. It is recommended but not required that students be comfortable with lighting a torch and soldering. < Back Visiting Artist Zhuwei Lu was born in a suburb of Shanghai, China. After graduating from high school, she went to college in Wuhan to learn the traditional Chinese art of lacquer. After college she chose to pursue her dream of becoming a jewelry designer and she came to the United States to study jewelry design at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
