Each class will focus on creating different styles of unconventional clasps. If you take both sessions, you'll come away learning how to make 6 different styles! In this 3 day workshop, participants will create 4 different samples of alternative clasp mechanisms. These clasp mechanisms can be modified and incorporated in unique and unusual ways, in innumerable variations, into necklace and bracelet closures - becoming integrated into the design, or as the main attraction of a jewelry piece. Clasps don’t have to be an afterthought at the back of a chain. These are clasp mechanisms that are functional, fun, intriguing and invite being taken apart and put back together like a puzzle. Class 1: In this 3-day session/class (October 16 – 18), we will create the above four clasp mechanism samples in sterling silver: 2 versions of a Rotating Insert Clasp, a basic, and a more complex version of that clasp, an Interlocking Puzzle Clasp, and a Wedge Lock Clasp. On October 15th, the evening before the workshop, Suzanne will give an approximately sixty-minute presentation that will introduce participants to many different types of clasping methods and mechanisms for jewelry, both historical and contemporary. It will also include a section on clasp inspirations - ideas coming from non-jewelry sources, to inspire creative thinking about clasps. Prerequisite Students need to be able to solder and saw. Steel has many practical advantages, not the least of which are cost and accessibility. Steel is strong, malleable, and ductile, making it durable and workable. Fusing gold and other non-ferrous metals to steel takes it to another level and results in jewelry that has a modern, urban edge but also feels ancient and rich. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN • Basics of working with steel. Sourcing steel, its characteristics, techniques such as shearing, sawing, forming and soldering steel. • Sourcing. All about powdered metals...where to buy them, the metals, alloys and formulas (pure powders, flakes, metal clay, etc.) that are available in powder form and how to grind your own powders. • Effects. Understanding how the various powdered metals react when fused to steel. • Mixing. How to mix powdered metals “paint” to create your own individual palette of colors and textures. • Painting techniques. Painting powdered metals onto steel and fusing them to the surface. Heat and flow control. Troubleshooting. • Advanced fusion techniques. How to mix various powdered metals to create alloys both in the “paint” or during the fusion process. • Designing. Exploration of design possibilities. WORKSHOP STRUCTURE Each day will be structured with a combination of instruction, demonstrations, interactive discussion and hands-on work. The instructor will provide individual support and guidance throughout. During the workshop, you will have the guidance and opportunity to produce at least three completed pieces of steel jewelry. Patterns for these pieces will be included in the course handout and you are free to use the patterns or create your own designs. Develop skills in making filigree wire, learn to analyze strength in layout and design, and enhance your soldering skills with an awareness of connections and a strong understanding of heat control. In this class, students will learn the traditional technique of open back filigree. Beginning with the simple materials of flat stock and round wire, students will twist, flatten, hammer, form and soler their materials into complete pieces. Some of the skills that will be developed in this class include how to make filigree wire, analyzing strength in layout and design, enhanced soldering skills, awareness of connections when soldering, and how quickly filigree wire can melt. The format of this technique will be taught as a pendant or earrings, but a motivated student would be welcome to branch out and try something more ambitious. Filigree is a tedious process that requires patience and consideration, as such, students will be encouraged to pace themselves accordingly with their projects. Class Details: Tuesday Evening Beginner 2 & 3 Metalsmithing Instructor: Donna D'Aquino 8 Sessions, Tuesdays, 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm Class Dates: 3/18, 3/25, 4/1, 4/8, 4/15, 4/22, 4/29, 5/6 Prerequisites: At least one (1) Beginner Metalsmithing Class at MAGG within the last 6 months, or permission of the instructor. Download Class Supply List Building upon the skills that students have learned in the first beginning class, this class will focus on further developing and improving those skills. While working toward honing soldering and finishing skills, students will be introduced to a variety of stone setting applications. Some of the stone setting techniques that will be covered are tube setting, flush setting, simple prong setting and bezels. We will also delve into step bezels and tab setting as time allows. This is a fast paced, skills based class. Students are encouraged to design and create pieces of their choice. Demonstrations will be tailored to the student’s needs at the level that is appropriate for the class. Techniques and skills that may be covered are: making rings, bracelets, earrings, simple mechanisms, hollow forms and chains. The instructor will focus on helping students advance their work through gentle critiques and hands on demonstrations.
