CHALLENGE REQUIREMENTS: There is no standardized kit of materials, but your piece must comply with these parameters: Must include at least 3 different metals.(Eg. sterling, brass, steel, copper, etc.) Must include at least 2 of these forms of metal: sheet, wire, tubing, and grain. These forms must be recognizable in the final piece. Must include at least 1 component of clay, fiber, wood, glass, or plastic. May include NO MORE THAN 1 additional material of your choice. Must not exceed 8 x 8 x 8 inches May or may not be wearable. Bonding agents such as solder, glue, or epoxy will not count as materials. Questions? Class Details: Tuesday Evening Beginner 2 & 3 Metalsmithing Instructor: Donna D'Aquino 8 Sessions, Tuesdays, 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm Class Dates: 3/18, 3/25, 4/1, 4/8, 4/15, 4/22, 4/29, 5/6 Prerequisites: At least one (1) Beginner Metalsmithing Class at MAGG within the last 6 months, or permission of the instructor. Supply List: Download class supply list below and will also be sent to students via email before class. Download Class Supply List Building upon the skills that students have learned in the first beginning class, this class will focus on further developing and improving those skills. While working toward honing soldering and finishing skills, students will be introduced to a variety of stone setting applications. Some of the stone setting techniques that will be covered are tube setting, flush setting, simple prong setting and bezels. We will also delve into step bezels and tab setting as time allows. This is a fast paced, skills based class. Students are encouraged to design and create pieces of their choice. Demonstrations will be tailored to the student’s needs at the level that is appropriate for the class. Techniques and skills that may be covered are: making rings, bracelets, earrings, simple mechanisms, hollow forms and chains. The instructor will focus on helping students advance their work through gentle critiques and hands on demonstrations.

This class will focus on further developing fabrication and hand skills through a number of hands on demonstrations. Previous Add to Cart Next This is a LIVE, IN-PERSON event. Transitions: As of May 1, 2024, there will be an administrative fee of $30 applicable for any changes made to your class format, including moving from in-person to virtual sessions. This fee is implemented to cover the administrative costs associated with processing such changes. PRE_REQUISITE : 1 Beginning class in the last 3 months or permission from the instructor. In this second and third level Beginning class students will build upon the skills they have previously learned. This class will focus on further developing fabrication and hand skills through a number of hands on demonstrations. Class will explore various forms of construction, connections and several methods of stone setting. Stone setting techniques to be covered will include tube setting, flush setting, simple prong setting, tab setting and bezel setting. With a focus on the principles of design and proper finishing, student projects may include pendants, rings, earrings, and bracelets. Fusing and Enameling Woven Steel Mesh October 20, 2025 Instructor Bette Barnett | During this workshop, students will have the opportunity to create various mesh forms, including cylinders, cubes and hemispheres. In addition, students will create at least two mesh pieces using fused metals and/or enamels. Previous Add to Cart Next Taught by Guest Instructor Bette Barnett With characteristics of both fabric and metal, woven steel mesh offers incredible creative opportunities. It does, however, require specialized techniques. In this interactive workshop, students will learn to: Understand mesh. What is woven steel mesh? What sizes are available? Where do you buy it? How can you use it? Design with mesh. Integrating it with other forms of mild steel (sheet, perforated steel and wire) Combining it with non-traditional materials. Using it to capture elements. Work with mesh. Cutting, patterning, deforming/forming and scoring/bending it. Also, finishing edges and forming seams. Solder or micro weld. Connecting mesh sheets. Soldering and cold connections. Fuse gold and other metals to mesh. Fusing pallions and metal powder: gold, copper, silver and shibuichi. Incorporate enamel in design. Using enamel to enhance design of mesh pieces. Torch and kiln firing. Layer enameled mesh. Creating added interest by layering enameled steel mesh. Patinating and sealing your work. Flame and chemical patinas. Wax, oil and lacquer sealers.During this workshop, students will have the opportunity to create various mesh forms, including cylinders, cubes and hemispheres. In addition, students will create at least two mesh pieces using fused metals and/or enamels.Each day will be a combination of demos, discussion and individual exploration. There will be plenty of time for students to work independently and the instructor will always be available provide one-on-one guidance, support and troubleshooting.
