Some of the techniques that will be covered are fine soldering of ear wires and earring posts, creating hand-made ear wires, different approaches to creating movement, adding dimension to your designs, various surface embellishments and patinas. Start Metalsmithing Our metalsmithing classes at the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia are the perfect way to get started in the world of metalworking. Our classes are designed to give you a solid foundation in the tools and techniques of the trade. All of our instructors are experienced metalsmiths, and are passionate about sharing their knowledge and skills with others. Come learn with us and take the first step towards creating your own beautiful metalwork. Becoming a metalsmith at the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia (MAGG) involves a structured process that includes beginning classes, open studio sessions, and opportunities for advancing your skills through intermediate and advanced classes. Here's a step-by-step description of how to start: Enroll in Beginning Classes: The first step is to enroll in beginning classes offered by MAGG. These classes are held once a week on varying days and times and typically last for 6-8 weeks. New sessions are available each season – Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer, providing flexibility for individuals to join at different times throughout the year. Once you complete the Beginning Classes your skills will be evaluated by one of our instructors to allow you to move forward through the process. Open Studio Sessions: After completing the beginning classes, members have the opportunity to participate in open studio sessions. One of the unique features of MAGG is our Open Studio Sessions allowing members to put into practice the skills they have learned in class. Some open studio sessions may directly follow a specific class, providing a seamless transition for hands-on application. Skill Honing in Intermediate Classes: For those who wish to further develop their skills, intermediate classes are offered every 6 weeks. These intermediate classes provide a more in-depth exploration of metalsmithing techniques, allowing members to refine their craftsmanship. Advanced Classes: Beyond intermediate levels, advanced classes are also available for individuals looking to take their metalsmithing expertise to the next level. These advanced classes likely cover advanced techniques, specialized projects, and more intricate aspects of the craft. Workshops: To enrich the learning experience, MAGG organizes workshops featuring various guest artists. These workshops offer a unique chance for members to learn from experienced and accomplished metalsmiths, gaining insights into diverse techniques, styles, and approaches. In this class you will learn the basic skills of sawing, soldering and shaping metal, correct sawing techniques, how to safely use an acetylene and air torch and use a rolling mill to create texture. With an emphasis on design considerations, suggested projects include rings, pendants with handmade chains, and earrings in sterling silver and gold. Working with gold includes alloying, pouring ingots, as well as fabricating sheet, wire and tubing. On the advanced level, the class prepares those who want to make jewelry professionally, while paying close attention to every student's needs. Each class will focus on creating different styles of unconventional clasps. If you take both sessions, you'll come away learning how to make 6 different styles! In the second, 2-day part of this workshop, participants will create 2 different samples of alternative clasp mechanisms. These clasp mechanisms can be modified and incorporated in unique and unusual ways, in innumerable variations, into necklace and bracelet closures - becoming integrated into the design, or as the main attraction of a jewelry piece. Clasps don’t have to be an afterthought at the back of a chain. These are clasp mechanisms that are functional, fun, intriguing and invite being taken apart and put back together like a puzzle. Part 2 In the second 2-day session/class (October 19 & 20), we will create the above two clasp mechanism samples: a Rotating Key Lock Clasp and a Side-box Clasp. On October 15th, the evening before the workshop, Suzanne will give an approximately sixty-minute presentation that will introduce participants to many different types of clasping methods and mechanisms for jewelry, both historical and contemporary. Click Here to Join Class Description Learn how to etch your copper-based alloys (copper, brass, bronze & nickel) using salt water, a battery and a Silhouette Cameo die cutting machine to cut custom vinyl decals as the resist. We will cover how to apply the vinyl resist to your copper based alloy, how to safely and properly etch your metal, how to stop the etching process, how to clean up the salt water when the etching process is complete, and how to properly filter the salt water so it can be reused again and stored properly. A list of all materials used in class will be provided. You will leave with at least 1 fully etched sheet of copper (or copper based alloy) ready to be turned into something fabulous! Chains, Links, Clasps - The choices are endless! Using a variety metals including Argentium Silver, Sterling, Copper and/or Brass wire, this one day intensive will focus on the formation of various styles of links and repetitious components. These components will be assembled to be create chains with simple clasps. Some of the techniques that will be covered In this class are fabricating components from wire and sheet. We will explore different ways of attaching the components to one another, making jump rings and rivets. Fusing, texturing, and fine soldering, are some of the ways we will complete the chains. We will also explore a variety of simple clasps. Students can expect to finish one necklace or bracelet, depending on the complexity of the links they choose. < Back Visiting Artist Jennifer Stenhouse is an artist, metalsmith, and instructor living in Seattle Washington near the waters of Puget Sound. She grew up in Atlanta Georgia, spending as much time as possible around the coast of Georgia and Florida combing the beaches for treasure at every given opportunity. Her work includes jewelry and sculpture that is inspired by the beaches, ocean, world mythologies. She has been teaching art and jewelry classes, live and online workshops, lecturing, and exhibiting throughout the U.S. and Mexico for over 25 years. Recognized as an outstanding educator and known expert in the arena of jewelry casting, Jennifer has more recently taught at the college and adult continuing education levels and is co-founder of Little Metal Foxes online jewelry courses. Currently she also works as a production jeweler and is doing research toward a book on the History, Timeline, and Technology of Jewelry Casting. Jennifer received her BFA from the University of New Mexico, and MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She began teaching while in New Mexico, and UW- Madison, leading to a professor position at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD,) in Foundations and Jewelry classes as an elective. Due to the strong interest from students wanting to major in Metals and Jewelry, Jennifer proposed and developed the Metals and Jewelry Department, and served as chair for several years. While in Savannah she also maintained a small studio in the historic City Market. Afterwards she was teaching jewelry and printmaking at the Vermont Art Exchange in North Bennington, VT. Later she would contribute teaching in Seattle at locations including North Seattle College, Pratt Fine Arts Center, Danaca Design, Tacoma Metal Arts Center, and Bainbridge Artists Resource Network.
