< Back Hydraulic Press: Metal Sampler Quilt April 4, 2025 Instructor Sarah Chapman | Through a combination of demonstration and practice, this fast-paced workshop will introduce participants to creating form and texture in metal with the hydraulic press to create a "sampler quilt". Previous Add to Cart Next Learn from Sarah Chapman Are you a jeweler with a hydraulic press sitting in your studio collecting dust? Or are you on the fence about whether you NEED a hydraulic press? Whether you own a hydraulic press, thinking about getting one, or want to use it in our studio, this fast-paced workshop will show you how to create form and texture in metal with the hydraulic press to create a “sampler quilt.” Through a combination of demonstration and practice: Learn how to achieve results not easily accomplished with any other methods by using the hydraulic press to experiment with techniques, such as embossing, pillowing, and die-cutting. Learn to utilize mechanical or “cold connections” that require just a few tools and no soldering, such as wire wrapping, mushroom rivets, tube rivets, stitching, staples, and using miniature nuts and bolts. Create your sampler quilt to hang on your wall or wear as a piece of jewelry. While this is an introductory level workshop, some fundamental metalwork experience is recommended. Skills needed to satisfactorily complete the project include the ability to use a jeweler’s saw frame and prior experience with filing metal. Click Here to Join Class Description Please Note: No Class on November 26th! In this 6 week Beginning Class we will focus on soldering. Achieving the perfect solder seam requires many hours of practice and patience. In this class I will work to demystify some of the challenges around soldering. Through a variety of samples, both simple and complex, we will explore different ways to achieve success. By the end of our 6 weeks, students should have a full understanding of the differences between easy, medium and hard solder and when to use each of them. We will also learn about the different types of surfaces (bricks) one can use to solder and when it is best to use which surface. While it will be helpful to have a basic understanding of soldering, students of all levels are welcome. < Back Bezel Fabrication and Construction May 17, 2024 Instructor Sam Woehrmann | Learn to fabricate bezels in 22k gold, 18k gold, and sterling silver for cabochons, faceted stones, gems with rough surfaces, rose cut gems in geometric shapes, and more! Previous Add to Cart Next Register for EITHER the in-person OR virtual event. If attending virtually, live interaction with the in-person class will occur via Zoom. If attending in-person, please plan to arrive no more than 15 minutes early to the class. ----- CAN'T ATTEND LIVE? ----- ----- WANT TO REVIEW WHAT YOU LEARNED? ----- A recording of the workshop will be available to all participants for 30 days following the workshop. Transitions: As of May 1, 2024, there will be an administrative fee of $30 applicable for any changes made to your class format, including moving from in-person to virtual sessions. This fee is implemented to cover the administrative costs associated with processing such changes. We will be learning my method of fabricating bezels in 22k gold and either 18k gold or sterling silver. I'll bring gemstones to purchase or you can use stones you already have. Cabochons, faceted stones, pearls or gems with rough surfaces, rose cut gems in geometric shapes are all welcome. We will learn how to shape the bezels to fit specific stones. Making interior seats for faceted gems or stones we want to raise higher in their settings for design purposes. Learn fast efficient ways to set stones in tube settings for use in constructing finished pieces. I like to use diamonds, sapphires or rubies so we can set them first and solder with them in place to keep the settings clean and to add some sparkle where it is harder to reach later. I'll talk and demonstrate a few ways of attaching bezels to one another strategically to bring designs together. Finish your pieces after learning how to safely set stones into your newly made settings and some tips I've learned along the way as well as techniques I have figured out after working many hours at the bench.

Come ready to show off your favorite work and get to know local metalsmiths and makers through our Show and Tell speed friending event. While light bites and drinks will be provided, we encourage guests to bring a potluck dish to share with the community. Take a tour of the new facilities, and make sure to stick around for a special sand casting project with instructor Jay Reddish. This event is open to all. We ask that all attendees honor this intention: to uplift trans and queer people, and to build a welcoming, inclusive community for everyone.
