< Back Visiting Artist Participation in the arts was always important to me growing up. A strong arts program in high school influenced my decision to pursue a degree in the arts. I chose the arts program at Bowling Green State University in northwest Ohio where I discovered and fell in love with metals. I was introduced to many artists, including Michael Boyd, who became an inspiration for me. Upon graduation I apprenticed for Michael Boyd at his studio in Colorado. That experience turned into an eight year adventure that continues today. It was with Michael that I learned to work with and manipulate stone, adding a new element to my love of jewelry design. Since being in Colorado I have started my own business, Ryan Gardner Designs. I now showcase my work in galleries across the country. In fact, you’ll be able to add stunning gold accents to your work for as little as $20. We’ll start by exploring alternative forms of gold—placer gold flour, gold powder, gold foil flakes—that offer more mileage than traditional forms such as wire, sheet and casting grain. We’ll alloy various karats and colors of gold so you can use less of the precious stuff while preserving its beautiful glow. We’ll also explore gold fusion approaches tailored specifically for gold and steel using a variety of bonding and heat control strategies. I don't believe in boundaries or rules, and I want to show you how how you can find experimental techniques that work for you. While working toward honing soldering and finishing skills, students will be introduced to a variety of stone setting applications. Some of the stone setting techniques that will be covered are tube setting, flush setting, simple prong setting and bezels. We will also delve into step bezels and tab setting as time allows. This is a fast paced, skills based class. Students are encouraged to design and create pieces of their choice. Demonstrations will be be tailored to the student’s needs at the level that is appropriate for the class. Techniques and skills that may be covered, are: making rings, bracelets, earrings, simple mechanisms, hollow forms and chains. The instructor will focus on helping students advance their work through gentle critiques and hands on demonstrations.
