In this two-day workshop, you’ll learn how to incorporate gold into your work without putting yourself in the poorhouse. In fact, you’ll be able to add stunning gold accents to your work for as little as $20. We’ll start by exploring alternative forms of gold—placer gold flour, gold powder, gold foil flakes—that offer more mileage than traditional forms such as wire, sheet and casting grain. We’ll alloy various karats and colors of gold so you can use less of the precious stuff while preserving its beautiful glow. We’ll also explore gold fusion approaches tailored specifically for gold and steel using a variety of bonding and heat control strategies. You’ll experiment with layering, fusing, and burnishing to achieve rich textures, unexpected effects and bold contrasts between raw blackened steel and the glow of gold. We will also explore fusing bronze powder that mimics the look of gold. Design is an essential element of eye appeal. < Back Visiting Artist Taylor is a full-time metalsmith in St. Louis, Missouri. She began creating jewelry in 2003 as "The Rare Bird", transitioning from beadwork to wire work. Entirely self-taught, she now builds her jewelry by hand from precious metals, preserving organic flora in sterling silver using lost wax casting techniques and setting gemstones. She has been featured in Step by Step Wire Jewelry Magazine, Easy Wire Magazine, and ArtJewlery Magazine and frequently teaches virtual jewelry-making workshops. As a woman of mixed ancestry (54% European and 48% African), Taylor often struggles to articulate where she fits in society. Working through silver, stone, and beads, she is discovering who she is in a tangible way. Whether casting organic botanicals to reflect Victorian floriography or weaving and stringing African trade beads, her pieces bridge the divide across her cultural identity. Let’s get your jewelry moving! This four session demonstration filled workshop will cover different ways to connect and get fluid movement into your jewelry. Demonstrations will include; rivet and hinge variations from wire, partial tubing and drilled thick stock, and linking items together in ways that achieve ease of movement. We’ll focus on the pendant and chain forms, playing with how to create movement within the pieces, which may be applied to a locket, pair of earrings, bracelets or other pieces. Participants are invited to come with a movement design problem that we can problem solve together.
