This class will focus on further developing fabrication and hand skills through a number of hands on demonstrations. In this 8 week Beginning Class we will focus on soldering. Achieving the perfect solder seam requires many hours of practice and patience. In this class I will work to demystify some of the challenges around soldering. Through a variety of samples, both simple and complex, we will explore different ways to achieve success. By the end of our 8 weeks, students should have a full understanding of the differences between easy, medium and hard solder and when to use each of them. We will also learn about the different types of surfaces (bricks) one can use to solder and when it is best to use which surface. Class Description and Objectives We will start this class with a focus on constructing one or more stone settings, building on your previous experience and skill level. With an emphasis on design considerations, suggested projects include rings, pendants with handmade chains, and earrings in sterling silver and gold. Working with gold includes alloying, pouring ingots, as well as fabricating sheet, wire and tubing. On the advanced level, the class prepares those who want to make jewelry professionally, while paying close attention to every student's needs. 2. Stones that you would like to work with. If possible, bring stones that are a little more challenging than what you have already worked with. If you have already worked with round or oval shapes, try a different shape or smaller stones. Please bring your materials, including silver scraps, to the first class. We will recycle scraps into workable sheets and wires. Advanced jewelry making includes working with gold, if desired. Any unwanted jewelry from 14k up can be recycled. It is also okay to work with non-precious metals, copper, brass and others, especially to practice soldering mixed metals. Silver sheet and wire will be available on site from Dallas Vinson. When returning a product, you can request an identical replacement item or request a refund. However, we do not accept returns of used tools (except in cases of manufacturer defect), because tools are subject to abuse, misuse and damage that renders them unsellable after use. Tools to be returned, must be unused, and in their original unopened packaging. Please email for a return authorization. If the return is needed as a result of shipping damage, manufacturer defect, or our mistake, we pay the shipping charges - both to have your item sent back to us, and to send you a replacement item. These clasp mechanisms can be modified and incorporated in unique and unusual ways, in innumerable variations, into necklace and bracelet closures. Each class will focus on creating different styles of unconventional clasps. If you take both sessions, you'll come away learning how to make 6 different styles! In the second, 2-day part of this workshop, participants will create 2 different samples of alternative clasp mechanisms. These clasp mechanisms can be modified and incorporated in unique and unusual ways, in innumerable variations, into necklace and bracelet closures - becoming integrated into the design, or as the main attraction of a jewelry piece. Clasps don’t have to be an afterthought at the back of a chain. These are clasp mechanisms that are functional, fun, intriguing and invite being taken apart and put back together like a puzzle. Part 2 In the second 2-day session/class (October 19 & 20), we will create the above two clasp mechanism samples: a Rotating Key Lock Clasp and a Side-box Clasp. On October 15th, the evening before the workshop, Suzanne will give an approximately sixty-minute presentation that will introduce participants to many different types of clasping methods and mechanisms for jewelry, both historical and contemporary. It will also include a section on clasp inspirations - ideas coming from non-jewelry sources, to inspire creative thinking about clasps.

Born in a small town in Southern Maine, May moved to Brooklyn in 1998, where she lived and worked for 18 years,focusing primarily on painting and photography. Over the past decade, May’s creative focus has evolved toward sculpture and jewelry design, blending her fine art background with a love for form, texture, and wearability. Working primarily with mixed metals, May’s pieces are known for their organic textures and bold, minimalist designs created to be light enough for everyday wear. May Engelhardt

< Back Georgia Talent Ekaterina Domashchenko graduated from Georgia Tech with a business degree before she ever stepped foot in a jewelry studio. Soon after graduating with an unfulfilling degree she took her first metalsmithing class and fell head over heels for it. Years of beading and wire work prepared her for jewelry design but Ekaterina's primary inspiration comes from the sculptural capacity of metal. Her work often features intricate sawed out leaves, flowers, and trees, and wax cast elements as well. Ekaterina Domashchenko
