We will take a deep dive into this new approach and learn how to use powdered metals as paint to create colorful hues and shades on steel surfaces. You will be able to experiment with a spectrum of colors, textures, and patterns, pushing the boundaries of traditional metalsmithing. Steel has many practical advantages, not the least of which are cost and accessibility. Steel is strong, malleable, and ductile, making it durable and workable. It is lightweight, making larger pieces of jewelry comfortable. Topping the list of advantages is steel's high melting temperature, which makes it ideal for fusing other metals to it. Fusing gold and other non-ferrous metals to steel takes it to another level and results in jewelry that has a modern, urban edge but also feels ancient and rich. As alternative metal, steel has another big advantage—it’s different—and invites you to dare to stand apart and try new things. Steel can serve as a catalyst that opens the floodgates of creativity. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN • Basics of working with steel. Sourcing steel, its characteristics, techniques such as shearing, sawing, forming and soldering steel. • Sourcing. All about powdered metals...where to buy them, the metals, alloys and formulas (pure powders, flakes, metal clay, etc.) that are available in powder form and how to grind your own powders. • Effects. Understanding how the various powdered metals react when fused to steel. • Mixing. How to mix powdered metals “paint” to create your own individual palette of colors and textures. • Painting techniques. Painting powdered metals onto steel and fusing them to the surface. Heat and flow control. Troubleshooting. • Advanced fusion techniques. How to mix various powdered metals to create alloys both in the “paint” or during the fusion process. • Designing. Exploration of design possibilities. WORKSHOP STRUCTURE Each day will be structured with a combination of instruction, demonstrations, interactive discussion and hands-on work. The instructor will provide individual support and guidance throughout. During the workshop, you will have the guidance and opportunity to produce at least three completed pieces of steel jewelry. Patterns for these pieces will be included in the course handout and you are free to use the patterns or create your own designs. SKILL LEVEL Students should be comfortable using a torch and should possess basic metal working skills, such as sawing, filing and forming. We will cover how to apply the vinyl resist to your copper based alloy, how to safely and properly etch your metal, how to stop the etching process, how to clean up the salt water when the etching process is complete, and how to properly filter the salt water so it can be reused again and stored properly. A list of all materials used in class will be provided. You will leave with at least 1 fully etched sheet of copper (or copper based alloy) ready to be turned into something fabulous!

Previous Add to Cart Next Learn from Sarah Chapman Are you a jeweler with a hydraulic press sitting in your studio collecting dust? Or are you on the fence about whether you NEED a hydraulic press? Whether you own a hydraulic press, thinking about getting one, or want to use it in our studio, this fast-paced workshop will show you how to create form and texture in metal with the hydraulic press to create a “sampler quilt.” Through a combination of demonstration and practice: Learn how to achieve results not easily accomplished with any other methods by using the hydraulic press to experiment with techniques, such as embossing, pillowing, and die-cutting. Learn to utilize mechanical or “cold connections” that require just a few tools and no soldering, such as wire wrapping, mushroom rivets, tube rivets, stitching, staples, and using miniature nuts and bolts. Create your sampler quilt to hang on your wall or wear as a piece of jewelry. While this is an introductory level workshop, some fundamental metalwork experience is recommended. Skills needed to satisfactorily complete the project include the ability to use a jeweler’s saw frame and prior experience with filing metal. My work as a maker expresses and integrates history of place, people, and materials. I believe that it’s all connected... that we are all connected. I strive to bring that oneness into each object I create. My jewelry is a narrative conceptual sculpture that is both architectural, organic and talismanic. My energy as a maker integrates the mountains and desert alike into each treasure. They are powerful and seductive bold forms that bridge my environment, my material and my history and the red thread connection I have with the wearer that was meant to be experienced by the select few. I owned two paint your own pottery stores, Paint Yourself Silly, for 10 years, a coaching business, Artful Success, where I helped artists with their business, and a tool and supply company, Whole Lotta Whimsy, for 10 years. I was a senior teacher for Rio Grande for 10 years and have been teaching metals since 1996. I have been published in several books and many magazines. I also have a fantastic group on Facebook that I started in the summer of 2020, Jewelry Makers Guild where artists share their work, their issues, and their tools to share and help others. Combine stones in new ways in this workshop with Ryan Gardner. Students will learn how to incorporate stones into one another by carving an opening into the larger stone to accommodate the smaller stone within it. Then Ryan will demonstrate how he fabricates and aligns the bezels so they can be soldered to the same back plate creating a unique single element with both stones. In this workshop, you will: • Discover how to carve openings into stones to nest one stone inside another. • Learn techniques to align and fabricate bezels for multi-stone settings. • Master how to solder bezels onto a shared back plate, creating a seamless and unified design. • Gain insight into Ryan’s signature approach to designing one-of-a-kind, dimensional stone settings. • Leave with a finished piece or the skills to take your stone-setting work to the next level! Click Here to Join Class Description Cloisonne´enameling is simply a techniquer of enameling in which a wire is used to create cells, lines, and shapes within the enamel piece. Making a Cloisonne´ enamel piece may seem like a challenging task for beginning students. This workshop simplifies the Cloisonne´process by breaking it down into several small steps; this makes the concepts easy to grasp and the skills simple to perform. Students will begin with enameling basics: preparing, applying, and firing enamel onto copper and fine silver. Enamel science concepts will be demonstrated to help students understand the different variables that affect their results. And most importantly, students will make cloisonne´ samples to practice the different skills and steps involved in making cloisonne: 1. Bend, apply, and fire your wires. 2. Paint and fire transparent and opalescent enamel color layers. 3. Add silver foil elements to create "layers of reflected light". 4. Build up layers of enamel to the height of the wires. 5. Finish the surface: Grinding and Polishing techniques 6. Bezel-setting for enamels (depending on available time). Students should expect to make several color samples and one/two completed simple cloisonne´pieces.
