< Back Bezel Fabrication and Construction May 17, 2024 Instructor Sam Woehrmann | Learn to fabricate bezels in 22k gold, 18k gold, and sterling silver for cabochons, faceted stones, gems with rough surfaces, rose cut gems in geometric shapes, and more! If attending in-person, please plan to arrive no more than 15 minutes early to the class. ----- CAN'T ATTEND LIVE? ----- ----- WANT TO REVIEW WHAT YOU LEARNED? ----- A recording of the workshop will be available to all participants for 30 days following the workshop. Transitions: As of May 1, 2024, there will be an administrative fee of $30 applicable for any changes made to your class format, including moving from in-person to virtual sessions. This fee is implemented to cover the administrative costs associated with processing such changes. We will be learning my method of fabricating bezels in 22k gold and either 18k gold or sterling silver. I'll bring gemstones to purchase or you can use stones you already have. Cabochons, faceted stones, pearls or gems with rough surfaces, rose cut gems in geometric shapes are all welcome. We will learn how to shape the bezels to fit specific stones. Making interior seats for faceted gems or stones we want to raise higher in their settings for design purposes. Learn fast efficient ways to set stones in tube settings for use in constructing finished pieces. I like to use diamonds, sapphires or rubies so we can set them first and solder with them in place to keep the settings clean and to add some sparkle where it is harder to reach later. I'll talk and demonstrate a few ways of attaching bezels to one another strategically to bring designs together. Finish your pieces after learning how to safely set stones into your newly made settings and some tips I've learned along the way as well as techniques I have figured out after working many hours at the bench.

While working toward honing soldering and finishing skills, students will be introduced to a variety of stone setting applications. Some of the stone setting techniques that will be covered are tube setting, flush setting, simple prong setting and bezels. We will also delve into step bezels and tab setting as time allows. This is a fast paced, skills based class. Students are encouraged to design and create pieces of their choice. Demonstrations will be be tailored to the student’s needs at the level that is appropriate for the class. Techniques and skills that may be covered, are: making rings, bracelets, earrings, simple mechanisms, hollow forms and chains. The instructor will focus on helping students advance their work through gentle critiques and hands on demonstrations.

Start Metalsmithing Our metalsmithing classes at the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia are the perfect way to get started in the world of metalworking. Our classes are designed to give you a solid foundation in the tools and techniques of the trade. All of our instructors are experienced metalsmiths, and are passionate about sharing their knowledge and skills with others. Come learn with us and take the first step towards creating your own beautiful metalwork. Becoming a metalsmith at the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia (MAGG) involves a structured process that includes beginning classes, open studio sessions, and opportunities for advancing your skills through intermediate and advanced classes. Here's a step-by-step description of how to start: Enroll in Beginning Classes: The first step is to enroll in beginning classes offered by MAGG. These classes are held once a week on varying days and times and typically last for 6-8 weeks. New sessions are available each season – Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer, providing flexibility for individuals to join at different times throughout the year. Once you complete the Beginning Classes your skills will be evaluated by one of our instructors to allow you to move forward through the process. Open Studio Sessions: After completing the beginning classes, members have the opportunity to participate in open studio sessions. One of the unique features of MAGG is our Open Studio Sessions allowing members to put into practice the skills they have learned in class. Some open studio sessions may directly follow a specific class, providing a seamless transition for hands-on application. Skill Honing in Intermediate Classes: For those who wish to further develop their skills, intermediate classes are offered every 6 weeks. In this class you will learn the basic skills of sawing, soldering and shaping metal, correct sawing techniques, how to safely use an acetylene and air torch and use a rolling mill to create texture. See Available Classes Intermediate Metalsmithing Intermediate Metalsmithing | We will start this class with a focus on constructing one or more stone settings, building on your previous experience and skill level. With an emphasis on design considerations, suggested projects include rings, pendants with handmade chains, and earrings in sterling silver and gold. Working with gold includes alloying, pouring ingots, as well as fabricating sheet, wire and tubing. On the advanced level, the class prepares those who want to make jewelry professionally, while paying close attention to every student's needs.
