Click Here to Join Class Description MAGG has a Di-Acro 12” Finger Brake in its studio, for use by all classes, workshops, and open studios. Like all dedicated metal working equipment, it does one thing very well. The finger brake can bend metal in a very straight line to almost any angle. This workshop will cover the equipment’s advantages, limitations, and techniques for design and most efficient use. We will also learn how to adjust for the different thicknesses of metal that create different radii in bends. We will have an opportunity to make a small box with a lid and legs of your own design or use a supplied pattern that will hold two decks of playing cards for canasta or bridge. We will discuss decorative options and possibly have time for simple decoration before we “brake” the box. Decorating is usually done before the metal is bent into the box form for ease of manipulation and to avoid distorting the shape caused by stretching the metal with hammering after cutting the pattern. We will cold connect legs to our box with copper rivets to conceal the corners and consider more decorative options. Prerequisite None. Beginners welcome! Materials, Supplies & Tools All recipients will receive a preliminary pattern for the demonstration box in case you would like to decorate the metal by hammering, stamping, etching or some such before the workshop. 12" X 12" sheet of silver, copper, brass, pewter, steel, aluminum, tin, etc. Steel or tin can be thinner, silver & copper should be 22–24 ga. It depends on the strength of metal you select. Demo will be using 22–24 ga copper. All tools and (copper) rivets will be provided by MAGG. Instructor Bio Class Dates
- Hydraulic Press: Metal Sampler Quilt | MetalArtsGuildGA.org
Members receive 8% OFF all classes and workshops! Hydraulic Press: Metal Sampler Quilt Instructor Sarah Chapman In-Person Friday April 4, 2025 10am-5pm EST 3 Day Workshop $540 Register Now Members receive 8% OFF! Click Here to Join Class Description Hydraulic Press Workshop: Metal Sampler Quilt Through a combination of demonstration and practice, this fast-paced workshop will introduce participants to creating form and texture in metal with the hydraulic press to create a “sampler quilt.” The press techniques and processes will also easily translate to making jewelry pieces such as pendants and earrings. Participants will learn how to achieve results not easily accomplished with any other methods by using the hydraulic press to experiment with techniques such as embossing, pillowing, and die-cutting. Participants can display their sampler quilt as a sculptural metal wall hanging, and we will also discuss how these techniques can easily be used to create wearable pieces as well. Workshop participants will learn to utilize mechanical or “cold connections” that require just a few tools and no soldering. Cold connections will be used to “piece” our metal quilt together, fasten metal layers to one another, and incorporate found objects like beads and shells. We will cover several categories of cold connections such as wire wrapping, mushroom rivets, tube rivets, stitching, staples, and using miniature nuts and bolts. While this is an introductory level workshop, some fundamental metalwork experience is recommended. Skills needed to satisfactorily complete the project include the ability to use a jeweler’s saw frame and prior experience with filing metal. - Piper Espey | MetalArtsGuildGA.org
< Back Georgia Talent Atlanta native Piper Espey grew up surrounded by all things metal. Daughter of a highly skilled metalsmith, she learned the magic of moving metal at an early age. Her chosen focus for undergraduate and graduate studies were Art and Psychology. She joined her two fields of studies through working with children with special needs for many years, where she witnessed the healing power of art. She initially discovered those healing powers through painting and drawing but following the death of her father, her medium of choice took a turn. He gifted her with his workshop of tools, and with that, through her grief journey, a metalsmith was re-born. Over the past decade, she has traveled the globe, seeking masters in her field to train under. She is an instructor for Spruill Center for the Arts, not only teaching adults but also introducing the craft to teens through their Summer Arts Program. Piper serves on the board of directors for the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia where she also teaches. “I am beyond fortunate to live in a city with such a brilliant and encouraging metalsmith community. I wouldn't be where I am today had it not been for so many pouring their knowledge of our craft and their experiences into me.” Growing up with the Chattahoochee River in her backyard, she decided to raise her children, who are now grown, with the same experience. The wild nature of the Chattahoochee has influenced the creation and particular style of her art immensely. She likes to describe the influence of the Chattahoochee as “Flow!” The same flow that is found within the rushing, as well as the slow moving waters of the river are present in her painting as well as her metal forms. Piper’s work is also energized by the organic shapes and vibrant Earth tones that are found in nature. Her jewelry and small sculpture work using mixed metals, turquoise and rough stones, found objects and elements of nature, are hand fabricated in her home studio located on the banks of her beloved Chattahoochee. When not in her studio or teaching, she can be found spending time with her family, or more than likely seeking a mountain to climb or a river to ride. http://instagram.com/pipermoonmetal Piper Espey Class Gallery

- Ekaterina Domashchenko | MetalArtsGuildGA.org
< Back Georgia Talent Ekaterina Domashchenko graduated from Georgia Tech with a business degree before she ever stepped foot in a jewelry studio. Soon after graduating with an unfulfilling degree she took her first metalsmithing class and fell head over heels for it. Years of beading and wire work prepared her for jewelry design but Ekaterina's primary inspiration comes from the sculptural capacity of metal. Her work often features intricate sawed out leaves, flowers, and trees, and wax cast elements as well. Ekaterina Domashchenko Class Gallery Make a Ring: Intro to Metalsmithing
