< Back Georgia Talent Jody DeWeese is a local enamelist, metal smith and photographer. She was extremely fortunate to have a high school art teacher that taught a wide range of artistic techniques including drawing, painting, stained glass, batik, casting, enameling, metal fabrication, etc. Jody received a BA in Languages but went on to a career in law enforcement and death investigation. She discovered photography in 2011 and earned her Certified Professional Photographer and Master Photographer through the Professional Photographers of America. She retired after a 30 year career and became a pet and wildlife photographer and a volunteer wildlife caregiver at the AWARE Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Jody discovered beading and volunteered at a local bead shop. She learned wire wrapping, cloisonné and champleve enameling and metal smithing. Enameling allowed her to elevate her pet and wildlife photography to a new art form. She loves to learn and explores a wide range of art forms. After learning about the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia, she became a student and an open studio monitor. Jody DeWeese

In this fast paced studio class, you will be introduced to a variety of tools and hand skills used to create jewelry and objects from non-ferrous metals. Using brass, copper, and sterling silver you will be introduced to a number of jewelry making techniques. Those techniques will include, but not be limited to: sawing, piercing, filing, sanding, riveting, texturing, forming, finishing, soldering and bezel setting a stone. With a focus on the principles of design, student projects may include pendants, rings, earrings, bracelets and hand-made chains. Click Here to Join Class Description MAGG has a Di-Acro 12” Finger Brake in its studio, for use by all classes, workshops, and open studios. Like all dedicated metal working equipment, it does one thing very well. The finger brake can bend metal in a very straight line to almost any angle. This workshop will cover the equipment’s advantages, limitations, and techniques for design and most efficient use. We will also learn how to adjust for the different thicknesses of metal that create different radii in bends. We will have an opportunity to make a small box with a lid and legs of your own design or use a supplied pattern that will hold two decks of playing cards for canasta or bridge. We will discuss decorative options and possibly have time for simple decoration before we “brake” the box. Decorating is usually done before the metal is bent into the box form for ease of manipulation and to avoid distorting the shape caused by stretching the metal with hammering after cutting the pattern. We will cold connect legs to our box with copper rivets to conceal the corners and consider more decorative options. Prerequisite None. Beginners welcome! Materials, Supplies & Tools All recipients will receive a preliminary pattern for the demonstration box in case you would like to decorate the metal by hammering, stamping, etching or some such before the workshop. 12" X 12" sheet of silver, copper, brass, pewter, steel, aluminum, tin, etc. Steel or tin can be thinner, silver & copper should be 22–24 ga. Click Here to Join Class Description Cloisonne´enameling is simply a techniquer of enameling in which a wire is used to create cells, lines, and shapes within the enamel piece. Making a Cloisonne´ enamel piece may seem like a challenging task for beginning students. This workshop simplifies the Cloisonne´process by breaking it down into several small steps; this makes the concepts easy to grasp and the skills simple to perform. Students will begin with enameling basics: preparing, applying, and firing enamel onto copper and fine silver. Enamel science concepts will be demonstrated to help students understand the different variables that affect their results. And most importantly, students will make cloisonne´ samples to practice the different skills and steps involved in making cloisonne: 1. Bend, apply, and fire your wires. 2. Paint and fire transparent and opalescent enamel color layers. 3. Add silver foil elements to create "layers of reflected light". 4. Build up layers of enamel to the height of the wires. 5. Finish the surface: Grinding and Polishing techniques 6. Bezel-setting for enamels (depending on available time). Students should expect to make several color samples and one/two completed simple cloisonne´pieces.
