Stationary or Swinging? on a Post or an Ear wire? Textured or Polished? So many options… In this one day intensive we will explore all these possibilities and more! Some of the techniques that will be covered are fine soldering of ear wires and earring posts, creating hand-made ear wires, simple earring mechanisms, riveting, different approaches to creating movement and adding dimension to your designs, various surface embellishments and patinas. Students should expect to complete at least 1 pair of earrings, or a variety of experiments. It is up to you! Prerequisite None. Students of all skill level are welcome. ( PLEASE NOTE there will not be time to teach stone setting if you do not already have those skills.) Click Here to Join Class Description Reticulation is the process of creating “mountains and valleys”, structures or patterns in metal surfaces. By heating specially prepared metal sheets with various torches, the semi-melted metal flows toward the flame. Surfaces created in this manner bring “life” to the metal surface. This workshop will cover: Discussion and creation of metal shapes suitable for reticulation Preparing the metal through depletion gilding Manipulation of the metal during the heating process Various torches used to create certain design patterns Forming reticulated metals into 3D forms Integration, patination, and repair of reticulated metals Granulation is an ancient method of surface embellishment that has seen a rebirth in the last century. Its appeal is the surface patterns, which are created through applying various size metal granules producing designs of geometric or abstract nature. Students will learn: Making small snips in metal Making a special flux for adhering the granules to metal Applying beads to metal surfaces Consideration of various methods of granulation Fusing granules to metal, how to repair them if not completely fired How to finish a work, patination and repair, if needed Consideration in combining granulation with other techniques QUESTIONS? < Back Visiting Artist Jennifer Stenhouse is an artist, metalsmith, and instructor living in Seattle Washington near the waters of Puget Sound. She grew up in Atlanta Georgia, spending as much time as possible around the coast of Georgia and Florida combing the beaches for treasure at every given opportunity. Her work includes jewelry and sculpture that is inspired by the beaches, ocean, world mythologies. She has been teaching art and jewelry classes, live and online workshops, lecturing, and exhibiting throughout the U.S. and Mexico for over 25 years. Recognized as an outstanding educator and known expert in the arena of jewelry casting, Jennifer has more recently taught at the college and adult continuing education levels and is co-founder of Little Metal Foxes online jewelry courses. Currently she also works as a production jeweler and is doing research toward a book on the History, Timeline, and Technology of Jewelry Casting. Jennifer received her BFA from the University of New Mexico, and MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She began teaching while in New Mexico, and UW- Madison, leading to a professor position at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD,) in Foundations and Jewelry classes as an elective. Due to the strong interest from students wanting to major in Metals and Jewelry, Jennifer proposed and developed the Metals and Jewelry Department, and served as chair for several years. While in Savannah she also maintained a small studio in the historic City Market. Afterwards she was teaching jewelry and printmaking at the Vermont Art Exchange in North Bennington, VT. Later she would contribute teaching in Seattle at locations including North Seattle College, Pratt Fine Arts Center, Danaca Design, Tacoma Metal Arts Center, and Bainbridge Artists Resource Network. These classes are held once a week on varying days and times and typically last for 6-8 weeks. Once you complete the Beginning Classes your skills will be evaluated by one of our instructors to allow you to move forward through the process. My work as a maker expresses and integrates history of place, people, and materials. I believe that it’s all connected... that we are all connected. My energy as a maker integrates the mountains and desert alike into each treasure. Click Here to Join Class Description Learn how to etch your copper-based alloys (copper, brass, bronze & nickel) using salt water, a battery and a Silhouette Cameo die cutting machine to cut custom vinyl decals as the resist. We will cover how to apply the vinyl resist to your copper based alloy, how to safely and properly etch your metal, how to stop the etching process, how to clean up the salt water when the etching process is complete, and how to properly filter the salt water so it can be reused again and stored properly. A list of all materials used in class will be provided. You will leave with at least 1 fully etched sheet of copper (or copper based alloy) ready to be turned into something fabulous! Class Outline 10:00am – 10:30am: Intro, overview, and setup explanation and tracing demo (quick demo) 10:30am – 11:30am: Cutting custom vinyl decals for students (cut two decals per student) 11:30am – 12:00am: Demo how to get vinyl onto metal, Students apply vinyl to their metal 12:00pm – 1:00pm: Lunch 1:00pm – 2:00pm: Salt water set up and getting metal prepped and protected 2:00pm – 3:00pm: Etching metal 3:00pm – 4:00pm: Cleaning up metal, Storing ferric nitrate or filtering salt water Prerequisite A basic metalsmithing understanding. No soldering is done in this workshop. Materials, Supplies & Tools Required to bring to class: a piece of 18g-20g (it can be thicker than 18g, but not recommended under 20g) copper based alloy (copper, brass, bronze or nickel) in whatever size is to be etched.
