< Back Christina Kober Designs began as a hobby, essentially to help Christina learn about her father's business. Her father owned JFF Jeweler Supply, a jeweler supply store in Atlanta, Georgia. Christina began working for him when she was 14. She knew nothing about the field--it was just a summer and holiday job to fill her closet with clothes. Little did she know it would turn into her passion. After graduating college, Christina continued working at JFF. She found that she was curious about the process of making jewelry and decided to begin taking classes. She was like a sponge, asking customers and coworkers questions, reading books and experimenting at home. Soon, she found herself recommending what tools to buy and providing her own insights into crafting and fabricating jewelry. In 2007, armed with a few designs and some business cards, Christina opened her etsy shop and started exhibiting at art festivals. She quickly found a connection to her customers through her fortune cookie collection & inspiring messages. < Back Visiting Artist Steel opened a door to freedom of expression in my jewelry creations, allowing me to offer wearable art that is less constrained than that of precious metals. As an artist I am luredby steel intoexploring a grittieraspect of jewelrycreation, intotaking thehumblest materialand applying vision,design andexecution to create art. Fusing gold to steel takes my work to another level entirely. The counterpoint of gold’s golden-yellow glow against the jet black of patinated steel sets off some sort of primal whisper in my head, a voice that murmurs, “Yes, this is it. This is the perfect tension, the ultimate balance.” I began my jewelry career in 2010, studying under expert jewelers and learning basic metalworking techniques. In 2013 I began studying the steel/gold fusing processes and continued with advanced workshops with the late Chris Nelson, who pioneered fusing gold to steel in the United States. I built on those studies by perfecting additional techniques and processes, including the ancient Korean art of Keum Boo applied to steel, fusing alternative metals and alloys to steel, fusing powdered metals to steel and working with various forms of steel such as wire, perforated sheet and woven mesh. I actively pursue research into working with steel and have published articles on the topic in Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist and MJSD Journal. In addition, I was selected by the Santa Fe Symposium to author a research paper entitled “Steel Jewelry— Expanding the Horizons of Steel and Gold,” which I presented in May 2022. We will discuss overhangs, undercuts, risers and explore floating elements. However, to be successful with these ideas, we need to determine the steps in the process of putting it together, how layers are attached and in what order. I will encourage you to develop your own collection of veneers and components in colors, textures and shapes that resonate with you. We will discuss sketching ideas and auditioning components as we develop a layered design. I will share different ways of attaching your layers and include simple wire embellishments in the process! This class is designed for polymer clay artists with some basic experience. If you take the Intro to Liquid Polymer Clay class you will have created veneers and components to continue into this workshop with ease. We will cover how to apply the vinyl resist to your silver, how to safely and properly etch your silver, how to stop the etching process, how to clean up the chemicals when the etching process is complete, and how to properly store your chemicals. A list of all materials used in class will be provided. You will leave with at least 1 fully etched sheet of Sterling Silver ready to be turned into something fabulous! < Back Visiting Artist Ace, of Studio Luna Verde, wandered (and settled) into the shadows of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, after many years exploring and hiking and driving all over the western U.S. Experiences have included driving 1950s era tour buses for Green Tortoise Adventure Travel throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Central America / performing for a year with a three ring circus / hiking into (and out of) the Grand Canyon so many times she’s lost count / living out of a '72 Toyota Landcruiser for three (and a half) years while exploring the U.S. / and failing miserably at surfing on the Sea of Cortez in Baja California. She loves spicy chocolate and lightening storms. < Back Georgia Talent Jody DeWeese is a local enamelist, metal smith and photographer. She was extremely fortunate to have a high school art teacher that taught a wide range of artistic techniques including drawing, painting, stained glass, batik, casting, enameling, metal fabrication, etc. Jody received a BA in Languages but went on to a career in law enforcement and death investigation. She discovered photography in 2011 and earned her Certified Professional Photographer and Master Photographer through the Professional Photographers of America. She retired after a 30 year career and became a pet and wildlife photographer and a volunteer wildlife caregiver at the AWARE Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Jody discovered beading and volunteered at a local bead shop. She learned wire wrapping, cloisonné and champleve enameling and metal smithing. Enameling allowed her to elevate her pet and wildlife photography to a new art form. She loves to learn and explores a wide range of art forms. After learning about the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia, she became a student and an open studio monitor. Jody DeWeese
