Start Metalsmithing Our metalsmithing classes at the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia are the perfect way to get started in the world of metalworking. Our classes are designed to give you a solid foundation in the tools and techniques of the trade. All of our instructors are experienced metalsmiths, and are passionate about sharing their knowledge and skills with others. Come learn with us and take the first step towards creating your own beautiful metalwork. Becoming a metalsmith at the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia (MAGG) involves a structured process that includes beginning classes, open studio sessions, and opportunities for advancing your skills through intermediate and advanced classes. Here's a step-by-step description of how to start: Enroll in Beginning Classes: The first step is to enroll in beginning classes offered by MAGG. These classes are held once a week on varying days and times and typically last for 6-8 weeks. New sessions are available each season – Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer, providing flexibility for individuals to join at different times throughout the year. Once you complete the Beginning Classes your skills will be evaluated by one of our instructors to allow you to move forward through the process. Open Studio Sessions: After completing the beginning classes, members have the opportunity to participate in open studio sessions. One of the unique features of MAGG is our Open Studio Sessions allowing members to put into practice the skills they have learned in class. Some open studio sessions may directly follow a specific class, providing a seamless transition for hands-on application. Skill Honing in Intermediate Classes: For those who wish to further develop their skills, intermediate classes are offered every 6 weeks. These intermediate classes provide a more in-depth exploration of metalsmithing techniques, allowing members to refine their craftsmanship. Advanced Classes: Beyond intermediate levels, advanced classes are also available for individuals looking to take their metalsmithing expertise to the next level. These advanced classes likely cover advanced techniques, specialized projects, and more intricate aspects of the craft. Workshops: To enrich the learning experience, MAGG organizes workshops featuring various guest artists. These workshops offer a unique chance for members to learn from experienced and accomplished metalsmiths, gaining insights into diverse techniques, styles, and approaches. Ongoing Learning and Practice: Becoming a skilled metalsmith is a continuous journey. Members are encouraged to engage in ongoing learning and practice, whether through open studio sessions, advanced classes, workshops, or personal projects. Community and Collaboration: MAGG fosters a sense of community among its members. Engaging with fellow metalsmiths provides opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a supportive environment for artistic growth. In this class you will learn the basic skills of sawing, soldering and shaping metal, correct sawing techniques, how to safely use an acetylene and air torch and use a rolling mill to create texture. See Available Classes Intermediate Metalsmithing Intermediate Metalsmithing | We will start this class with a focus on constructing one or more stone settings, building on your previous experience and skill level. With an emphasis on design considerations, suggested projects include rings, pendants with handmade chains, and earrings in sterling silver and gold. Working with gold includes alloying, pouring ingots, as well as fabricating sheet, wire and tubing. On the advanced level, the class prepares those who want to make jewelry professionally, while paying close attention to every student's needs. Repousse, which hammers a design from the backside of a piece of metal, creates unique and beautiful ornamentation. Highlight it with granulation, a notoriously difficult and mysterious technique that involves making granules or balls of fine silver (or gold) that get soldered or fused onto the repousse design to enhance its beauty, its detail, and its uniqueness. My work as a maker expresses and integrates history of place, people, and materials. I believe that it’s all connected... that we are all connected. I was a senior teacher for Rio Grande for 10 years and have been teaching metals since 1996. I have been published in several books and many magazines. Click Here to Join Class Description Learn how to etch your copper-based alloys (copper, brass, bronze & nickel) using salt water, a battery and a Silhouette Cameo die cutting machine to cut custom vinyl decals as the resist. We will cover how to apply the vinyl resist to your copper based alloy, how to safely and properly etch your metal, how to stop the etching process, how to clean up the salt water when the etching process is complete, and how to properly filter the salt water so it can be reused again and stored properly. A list of all materials used in class will be provided. You will leave with at least 1 fully etched sheet of copper (or copper based alloy) ready to be turned into something fabulous! Class Outline 10:00am – 10:30am: Intro, overview, and setup explanation and tracing demo (quick demo) 10:30am – 11:30am: Cutting custom vinyl decals for students (cut two decals per student) 11:30am – 12:00am: Demo how to get vinyl onto metal, Students apply vinyl to their metal 12:00pm – 1:00pm: Lunch 1:00pm – 2:00pm: Salt water set up and getting metal prepped and protected 2:00pm – 3:00pm: Etching metal 3:00pm – 4:00pm: Cleaning up metal, Storing ferric nitrate or filtering salt water Prerequisite A basic metalsmithing understanding. No soldering is done in this workshop. Materials, Supplies & Tools Required to bring to class: a piece of 18g-20g (it can be thicker than 18g, but not recommended under 20g) copper based alloy (copper, brass, bronze or nickel) in whatever size is to be etched. Combine stones in new ways in this workshop with Ryan Gardner. Students will learn how to incorporate stones into one another by carving an opening into the larger stone to accommodate the smaller stone within it. Then Ryan will demonstrate how he fabricates and aligns the bezels so they can be soldered to the same back plate creating a unique single element with both stones. In this workshop, you will: • Discover how to carve openings into stones to nest one stone inside another. • Learn techniques to align and fabricate bezels for multi-stone settings. • Master how to solder bezels onto a shared back plate, creating a seamless and unified design. • Gain insight into Ryan’s signature approach to designing one-of-a-kind, dimensional stone settings. • Leave with a finished piece or the skills to take your stone-setting work to the next level!
