Good news, this class will introduce you to the magic of Argentium. This alloy has it all; fuses to itself with just the heat of the torch, no solder, opening up design possibilities not achievable with traditional sterling silver. And NO firescale!! In this project-based class, we will break Argentium Silver (AS) sheet while hot to make irregular peices. These pieces will be arranged and fused onto an AS base to form a pendant. Next, we will learn how to grind AS into dust. The dust will be fused on in layers to create the textures in a pair of earrings. Make my demo design or use the materials for your own design. Finally, students will learn how to make and fuse 22k gold granules and 22k gold dust. < Back Intro to Filigree December 7, 2024 Instructor Courtney Pendergrast | Learn the traditional technique of open back filigree. Develop skills in making filigree wire, learn to analyze strength in layout and design, and enhance your soldering skills with an awareness of connections and a strong understanding of heat control. Previous Add to Cart Next This is an IN-PERSON workshop at the MAGG Studio. Please plan to arrive no more than 15 minutes early to the class. In this class, students will learn the traditional technique of open back filigree. Beginning with the simple materials of flat stock and round wire, students will twist, flatten, hammer, form and soler their materials into complete pieces. Some of the skills that will be developed in this class include how to make filigree wire, analyzing strength in layout and design, enhanced soldering skills, awareness of connections when soldering, and how quickly filigree wire can melt. The format of this technique will be taught as a pendant or earrings, but a motivated student would be welcome to branch out and try something more ambitious. Filigree is a tedious process that requires patience and consideration, as such, students will be encouraged to pace themselves accordingly with their projects. < Back Judy Parady: Making Beads and Other Hollow Forms for Lost Wax Casting August 9, 2025 Previous Add to Cart Next Making Beads and Other Hollow Forms for Lost Wax Casting | Instructor Judy Parady 2 day workshop | In-Person and Virtual Schedule: 10 am - 5 pm, Saturday 8/9 and Sunday 8/10 ____________ The workshop is about creating hollow models for lost wax casting using water-soluble wax cores to produce items such as beads, lockets, and small boxes.This technique can be used to create beads or hollow forms that are further processed after casting in metal. The workshop is a fun opportunity to explore a little-used material to produce voluminous hollow forms for casting. Details In the workshop, I show how to make hollow wax models for casting. We begin by exploring the range of shapes and sizes that yield the best casting results and viewing examples. Students then spend a few minutes thinking about and sketching the approximate shape and size of the hollow forms they want to make. The materials kit provides each student with two cube shapes and one rectangular shape of the water-soluble wax from which we carve the core of our models. Students start by carving a shape using the usual wax files and carving tools. When the first core shape is achieved, we proceed with the steps outlined below. While the core of the first item is being dissolved, students proceed to carve and process their next shape. After the core of the first bead is completely dissolved and the wax is now hollow, the student will refine the decorative openings and prepare the wax model for casting by adjusting surface texture, adding embellishments, and verifying the shell thickness. This process is repeated with the remaining wax cores, resulting in three hollow wax models that can be sent to a production caster. I can help you locate a jewelry caster.

While working toward honing soldering and finishing skills, students will be introduced to a variety of stone setting applications. Some of the stone setting techniques that will be covered are tube setting, flush setting, simple prong setting and bezels. We will also delve into step bezels and tab setting as time allows. This is a fast paced, skills based class. Students are encouraged to design and create pieces of their choice. Demonstrations will be be tailored to the student’s needs at the level that is appropriate for the class. Techniques and skills that may be covered, are: making rings, bracelets, earrings, simple mechanisms, hollow forms and chains. The instructor will focus on helping students advance their work through gentle critiques and hands on demonstrations.

This class will focus on further developing fabrication and hand skills through a number of hands on demonstrations. Previous Add to Cart Next Taught by Instructor Donna D'Aquino This is a LIVE, IN-PERSON event. Please plan to arrive no more than 15 minutes early to the class. Transitions: As of May 1, 2024, there will be an administrative fee of $30 applicable for any changes made to your class format, including moving from in-person to virtual sessions. This fee is implemented to cover the administrative costs associated with processing such changes. Please Note: No Class on November 26th! In this 6 week Beginning Class we will focus on soldering. Achieving the perfect solder seam requires many hours of practice and patience. In this class I will work to demystify some of the challenges around soldering. Through a variety of samples, both simple and complex, we will explore different ways to achieve success. By the end of our 6 weeks, students should have a full understanding of the differences between easy, medium and hard solder and when to use each of them. We will also learn about the different types of surfaces (bricks) one can use to solder and when it is best to use which surface. While it will be helpful to have a basic understanding of soldering, students of all levels are welcome.
